History
· The track opened as a 2.52-mile road course and drag strip in 1968.
· The first NASCAR Sprint Cup race was held in 1989.
· The first nine races were 300 kilometers and switched to a 350k format in 1998.
· The track was reconfigured to 1.949 miles in 1998 with the installation of an 890-foot chute between the original Turns 4 and 7.
· The track was reconfigured to 2.0 miles in 2001 and re-measured at 1.99 miles in 2002.

Notebook:
· There have been 23 NASCAR Sprint Cup races at Sonoma since the first race there in 1989.
· Rusty Wallace won the first NASCAR Sprint Cup pole.

· 14 different drivers have won poles; only four have won more than one.

Charter Joins the #2 Nationwide Series Team and RCR

Richard Childress Racing’s affiliation  with Charter will take center stage this weekend as the St. Louis, Mo.-based company becomes the primary sponsor on the No. 2 Chevrolet at Road America in the NASCAR Nationwide Series event on June 23 with driver Elliott Sadler. 


Charter, the fourth-largest cable operator in the United States and a leading broadband communications company, will also adorn several RCR entries throughout the 2012 season, including the Nos. 29 and 31 Sprint Cup Series Chevrolets, the Nos. 2 and 3 Nationwide Series Chevrolets and the Nos. 2 and 22 Chevrolets in the Camping World Truck Series.


“Charter is pleased to be part of RCR’s 2012 season and the excitement that NASCAR brings to our customers who follow NASCAR events on sports cable networks,” said Jim Heneghan, President Charter Media.


Sadler, a native of Emporia, Va., will get behind the wheel of the No. 2 Charter Chevrolet at the first road course event of the 2012 Nationwide Series season at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. Thus far this season, Sadler has earned two wins, six top-five and 10 top-10 finishes, placing him as the leader of the Nationwide Series driver championship point standings.  


“Charter has been a great addition to RCR, and we’ve enjoyed integrating their program with our partners,” said Richard Childress, president and CEO of Richard Childress Racing. “We value their participation on the No. 2 Charter Chevrolet and driver Elliott Sadler at Road America as well as throughout the season with RCR teams in all three major NASCAR touring series.”

NASCAR Sprint Cup Teams Test At Newly Repaved Michigan

For the second consecutive week, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams tested on a newly repaved race track and the reaction coming out of Thursday’s test session at Michigan International Speedway ranged from “holding your breath” to “being quite a rush.”

Speeds exceeded the 200 mile per hour barrier, with four drivers posting fastest lap times in excess of 200 miles per hour in the morning session when conditions were ideal for going fast. Teams arrived a day early to prepare for Sunday’s running of the 44th annual Quicken Loans 400 at MIS.

Teams tested the new surface at Pocono Raceway June 6-7 and that additional track time helped provide one of the most exciting and competitive races at the “Tricky Triangle” in years, with Joey Logano (No. 20 The Home Depot Toyota) claiming the win. For the first time since 1995, the 2.0-mile layout at MIS received a fresh coat of asphalt – 22,000-tons worth.

Mark Martin No. 55 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota laid down the fastest average lap in the morning session, clicking off a lap of 201.089 mph. Others that eclipsed the 200 mph mark included Kevin Harvick (No. 29 Budweiser Chevrolet – 200.999), Martin Truex Jr. (No. 56 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota – 200.306), and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (No. 88 Diet Mountain Dew/The Dark Knight Rises/National Guard Chevrolet – 200.206).

In the afternoon session, defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart No. 14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet ran the fastest lap at 201.896 mph. A total of seven drivers went over the 200-mph mark in the afternoon practice. For the day, Martin had the best 10 consecutive lap average of 197.434 mph.

Jimmie Johnson No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet, the five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion, described what it felt like navigating the new surface at MIS. “It is quite a rush for the driver to be going this fast,” said Johnson. “There seems to be a good combination with the new surface and the tire that Goodyear brought. I feel comfortable in the car, although it’s still quite the challenge as a driver to get around at these high speeds.”

Robin Pemberton, NASCAR Vice President of Competition, said that the feedback he was receiving from the drivers and teams about the new pavement was positive. “We’re getting good reports from the teams on how the new surface is doing,” said Pemberton. “That, plus the fact that Goodyear has done another outstanding job with picking a good tire for this event, things are shaping up for a really good event here on Sunday.”

Pemberton went on to say that the conditions for the morning test were “optimum for posting the fast speeds.”

“With the cool temperatures in the 60s and the track conditions, we’re pretty sure these are the fastest speeds we are going to see at this track,” said Pemberton. “Once the track takes on more rubber and the temperatures go up (temperatures are expected to approach the 90-degree mark this weekend), you should see the speeds go down some.”

Greg Biffle No. 16 3M-Salute Ford said that “every lap is like a qualifying lap and you are holding your breath." "It’s really, really fast here,” said Biffle, who is currently third in the championship point standings. “The one thing that I have liked seeing is that the track is pretty wide. The groove is all the way up in the middle of the second groove and that is certainly going to help racing around here at those speeds because it gives us some options.”

John Darby, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series director, said that from a technical standpoint, things were checking out well following the morning session. “Just like last week at Pocono, with the new repave, we want to make sure we have the gear ratio correct, cooling issues are nonexistent and from a technical side, all systems are go,” said Darby. “When a track gets a facelift like this, you have to make sure all things check out and we have seen that they do.”

The NASCAR Nationwide Series hits the track Friday at 8:30 a.m. for its first of three practice sessions. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams resume practice again tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.

Michigan Chassis Selections

Not all teams announce their weekly race chassis'. Here is a list of those teams that do reveal the chassis in the teams race preview:
#1- Jamie McMurray - Crew Chief Kevin “Bono” Manion and the No. 1 McDonald’s team will bring Chassis #1208 to Michigan International Speedway this weekend.  This chassis has raced this season at Las Vegas and Kansas finishing eighth and 14th, respectively.  Most recently, this chassis raced in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, finishing 21st.
#2- Brad Keselowski - The No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger team will race chassis PRS-820 during Sunday’s Quicken Loans 400 at Michigan International Speedway (MIS). Brad Keselowski last drove this chassis to a 36th-place finish at Texas Motor Speedway in April, after suffering fuel issues while running solidly inside the top five. The featured tag line on the bumper of Keselowski's “Blue Deuce” this weekend at Michigan will be “Home Sweet Home.”
#5- Kasey Kahne - Crew chief Kenny Francis has selected Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 5-724 for Sunday’s race at Michigan. Kahne first raced this car in May during the 600-mile Cup event at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway when he earned his first win with Hendrick Motorsports.
#9- Marcos Ambrose - The No. 9 RPM team has prepared chassis No. 784 for this weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race at Michigan International Speedway. This Stanley Ford was run previously this season at California and Kansas.
#14-Tony Stewart - Chassis No. 14-706: This car debuted in spectacular fashion in March at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., as Stewart took Chassis No. 14-706 from its ninth-place starting spot to lead twice for 42 laps en route to the win in the rain-shortened race. Prior to Fontana, the car spent numerous hours in the wind tunnel. It is a clone to Chassis No. 14-640, which won round three at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. No. 14-706’s second start, in April at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, was a bit quieter than its debut race. It started 23rd and gained 10 spots to finish 13th. Its third and most recent start came in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ longest race – the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. There, Stewart qualified 21st and finished 25th as Chassis No. 14-706 proved to be a handful throughout the 400-lap contest.
#15- Clint Bowyer - Primary Chassis No. 727 has raced twice in 2012. It started 11th and finished 13 at Fontana and started 26th and finished 11th at Darlington. Chassis No. 721 is the backup and previously served backup duty at Las Vegas, California, Texas, Kansas, Darlington, All-Star, Charlotte and Pocono but never raced.
#16- Greg Biffle - Biffle will race primary chassis RK-809 at Michigan, it last ran at Charlotte, finished 4th.
#17- Matt Kenseth - Kenseth's primary chassis this week is RK-808, a brand new chassis.
#21- Trevor Bayne - Donnie Wingo, crew chief of the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Fusion, has chosen the same Ford Fusion that Bayne raced at Las Vegas and Texas Motor Speedway.
The car finished ninth at Vegas and was fast at Texas before a brush with the wall left the team with a disappointing finish.
#22- A J Allmendinger - Crew Chief Todd Gordon said "We're preparing to utilize chassis  ‘PRS 821' at Michigan in Thursday's testing and use it for the remainder of the weekend."
#24- Jeff Gordon - Jeff Gordon will race HMS chassis 24-718 at Michigan. The car finished 21st at Kansas and seventh at Charlotte in 2012.
#27- Paul Menard - Paul Menard will pilot Chassis No. 397 from the Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stable. Built new for 2012 competition, this No. 27 Chevrolet will turn its first laps at MIS.
#29- Kevin Harvick - Kevin Harvick will pilot Chassis No. 378 from the Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stable. The Bakersfield, Calif., native drove this RCR racer earlier this season at Kansas Speedway where he brought home a sixth-place finish. This chassis was also used in competition twice during the 2011 season when Harvick captured a second-place finish at Chicagoland Speedway in September and a sixth-place finish at Kansas Speedway in October.
#31- Jeff Burton - Jeff Burton will race chassis No. 393 from the Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stable this weekend. This No. 31 Chevrolet, built new for the 2012 season, was utilized twice this year at Auto Club Speedway in March (started-19th, finished-22nd) and Darlington Raceway in May (started-10th, finished-18th).
#33- Austin Dillon - Austin Dillon will pilot Chassis No. 396 from the Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stable. This Chevrolet is a new addition to the RCR fleet and will be put through its first paces this weekend.
#36- Dave Blaney - Blaney will drive the No. 293 chassis, which he drove three times this season and five times during the 2011 season. The Harford, Ohio native’s best start with the No. 293 chassis was 17th at Richmond and best finish was 23rd at Phoenix this season. TBR purchased the chassis from Richard Childress Racing, where Jeff Burton drove the chassis prior to its debut with TBR.
#39- Ryan Newman - Chassis No. 39-727 will make its second start this season at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn. The chassis made its debut three 
weeks ago in the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Newman started 16th and struggled with a tight-handling racecar before finishing 14th.
#42- Juan Pablo Montoya - Crew Chief Chris “Shine” Heroy and the No. 42 Target team will bring Chassis #1209 to Michigan International Speedway this weekend.  This is the first race for this chassis.
#43- Aric Almirola - The team has prepared chassis No. 752 for the Michigan race. This chassis ran previously this season in the Sprint Showdown at Charlotte and at Kansas and Fontana. The car will carry the yellow and black taxi cab paint scheme of Medallion Financial.
#48- Jimmie Johnson -  Chassis No. 720 serves as the primary for Johnson at Michigan. Chassis No. 669 serves as the backup. The primary car won the All Star race and finished third at Kansas this year. 
#55- Mark Martin - Primary Chassis No.734, this is the first race in 2012 for this car. Backup Chassis 726 raced in Fontana and Darlington in 2012.
#88- Dale Earnhardt Jr - This weekend, crew chief Steve Letarte and the No. 88 crew will unload Hendrick Motorsports Chassis No. 88-716. Earnhardt most recently raced this chassis to a seventh-place finish at Kansas Speedway in April.
#99- Carl Edwards - The No. 99 Fastenal Blue Team will be unloading chassis 782.  Edwards last raced this car at the All Star race where he had an engine failure. He also raced it at California where he finished fifth.

Michigan Driver Statistics

Not all teams announce their weekly race previews. Here is a list of those teams that do reveal the information in the teams race preview: 

#1- Jamie McMurray - In 18 starts at MIS, McMurray has earned one top-five, four top-10s and led 14 laps.  He has an average start of 25 and an average finish of 19.5.  His best start is second in 2010, while his best finish is fourth in 2004.


#2- Brad Keselowski - Keselowski has five Cup starts at Michigan earning one top 5 and one top 10.


#5- Kasey Kahne - In 16 NASCAR Sprint Cup starts at Michigan International Speedway, Kasey Kahne has one win, six top-five finishes and seven top-10s. He has two pole positions at the two-mile oval, and won from the top starting spot in June 2006. Kahne has led 49 laps at Michigan and completed 98.6 percent of all laps attempted. He finished seventh in the track’s most recent event in August 2011.


#9- Marcos Ambrose - Ambrose' best finish (15) at Michigan International Speedway came in 2010 and his best start (16) came in 2011. He has completed 1,217 of 1,403 laps attempted at the two-mile track. Ambrose enters this weekend’s 400-mile race in 17th-place in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point standings.


#14-Tony Stewart - Stewart has one win, seven top-threes, 10 top-fives, 18 top-10s and has led a total of 206 laps in his 26 career Sprint Cup starts at Michigan. His average start is 20th, his average finish is 11.5, and he has a lap-completion rate of 95.3 percent.


#15- Clint Bowyer - Bowyer will make his 13th NSCS start at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday. In his previous 12 starts Bowyer has four top-10 finishes. His best finish at Michigan is eighth, which he has done three times including his last two trips. Bowyer has led seven laps in his 12 starts, averages a 19th place starting position and finish of 18th.


#16- Greg Biffle - Biffle has an average starting position of 13.8 and average finishing position of 12.8 at Michigan. He has two wins, seven top fives, 10 top 10s; one pole and an average finish of 12.8


#17- Matt Kenseth - Kenseth has an average starting position of 19.4 and an average finishing position of 9.5 at Michigan. Kenseth has achieved two wins, 11 top-five and 16 top-10 finishes at Michigan in the Cup series.


#18- Kyle Busch - Busch has one win, three top-fives, five top-10s and has led a total of 169 laps in 14 career Sprint Cup starts at Michigan. His average Michigan finish is 15.5. 


#21- Trevor Bayne - Bayne will attempt to make just his third start at Michigan this week in the Motorcraft Ford. His best finish at the track was sixteenth last year in June.


#22- A J Allmendinger - In nine career Sprint Cup starts at Michigan, Allmendinger is still looking for his first career top-10 there. He has been running at the finish in all nine of the races and finished on the lead lap six times. He has completed 96.7 percent of possible laps (1,746 of 1,806). Overall, Dinger has a 25.7 average start and 21.2 average finish at Michigan.


#24- Jeff Gordon - In 38 starts at the Irish Hills track, Gordon has two wins (1998 and 2001), five poles, 18 top-fives and 24 top-10's. But the four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion will need to find the groove quickly on the newly paved track if he is to battle for victory.


#27- Paul Menard - In 11 career Spring Cup Series starts at the two-mile oval, Menard has finished each of his contested races and completed 98 percent of his laps (2,164 of 2,209), leading for seven circuits. He has an average starting position of 27.2 and an average finishing position of 23.2. According to NASCAR’s Loop Data statistics, Menard ranks sixth in the category Green-Flag Passes, gaining 1,004 positions under green-flag conditions since its inception in 2006. The Eau Claire, Wis., native recorded both his best start (ninth) and his best finish (fourth) during his last year’s June visit to the Brooklyn, Mich.-based facility. He also owns two top fives, five top-10 finishes and one pole award in six NASCAR Nationwide Series starts at MIS.


#29- Kevin Harvick - Throughout the course of his Sprint Cup Series career, Harvick has 22 starts at the Brooklyn, Mich.-based facility, collecting one victory (August 2010), three top-five and seven top-10 finishes. The 36-year-old driver holds an average starting position of 18.8 and a 15th-place average finishing position at the two-mile tri-oval. Harvick has completed 4,259 of 4,300 (99 percent) of the contested laps and led 149. In addition to his 2010 Sprint Cup Series win at MIS, Harvick has one Nationwide Series win at the track which came in the fall of 2003.


#31- Jeff Burton - This weekend’s 400-mile event marks Burton’s 37th start at the two-mile facility and 634th-career Sprint Cup Series entry. Burton garnered four top-five and nine top-10 finishes at the track along with two pole awards in 1996 and 2006. He also led 75 laps at the Brooklyn, Mich.-based race track.


#33- Austin Dillon - Dillon will make his second career Sprint Cup start at Michigan this week. Dillon has four starts at MIS, spread among the NASCAR Nationwide Series (finished 19th in 2009), NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (finished fifth in 2010 and 22nd in 2011) and ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards (finished second in 2009). The 2011 Camping World Truck Series Driver Champion earned the pole award at the two-mile track in the 2010 edition of the Camping World Truck Series race.


#36- Dave Blaney - Blaney has started 22 races at Michigan with a best finish of sixth in August in August of 2007. Blaney has three DNF's as well at Michigan.


#39- Ryan Newman - Newman’s two career Sprint Cup wins at Michigan came in back-to-back fashion (August 2003 and June 2004). He also has, one pole (June 2005), five top-five finishes and six top-10s in 21 starts at the 2-mile oval.


#42- Juan Pablo Montoya - In 10 starts at MIS, Montoya has earned two top-10 finishes.  He has an average start and finish of 17.4 and 23.2, respectively.  His best start came in the summer of 2009, when the driver of the No. 42 Chevrolet rolled off third, while his best finish of sixth came in the spring of 2009.


#43- Aric Almirola - Almirola knows where Victory Lane is at MIS. He visited there with a race win in the Camping World Truck Series in 2010. In addition to his Truck win, Almirola also has one top-five finish in two Nationwide starts at Michigan. He’ll look to take his Medallion cab-themed Ford back to Victory Lane at the end of Sunday’s 400-mile Sprint Cup Series event.


#48- Jimmie Johnson - Johnson has yet to win at Michigan, but has scored three top 5's and eight top tens while suffering only one DNF. Johnsons best finish of second came last year in August at this track.


#51- Kurt Busch - In 22 starts at Michigan, Kurt Bush has two poles, two wins, three top 5's and eight ten's, along with seven DNF's.

#55- Mark Martin - In 52 Sprint Cup starts at Michigan, Martin owns five victories and 18  top-five finishes. He’s led 911 laps. Martin owns 40 Sprint Cup victories. 


#88- Dale Earnhardt Jr - In 25 Cup starts at Michigan, Earnhardt has recorded one win, two pole positions, four top-five finishes and eight top-10s. He has completed 99.1 percent of all laps he's attempted (4,851 laps of 4,894 total) and led 173 laps.


#99- Carl Edwards - Edwards will make his 16th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start at Michigan International Speedway Sunday. In his previous 15 starts, Edwards has two wins, nine top-five and 12 top-10 finishes. His average start at Michigan is 20.9, his average finish is 8.2. He has completed 99 percent of the laps he has attempted at the two-mile track. Only three times in his previous 15 starts has Edwards finished outside the top 10.

Richard Petty Headlines Press Conference for Disabled Vets

NASCAR legend Richard Petty joined Food City officials at a press conference today to promote a campaign that raises money for Paralyzed Veteran's of America.

From July 8 to Aug. 18, Food City is making donation slips available at all Food City locations. A similar event last year raised $125,000 for Paralyzed Veteran's of America.

"This year we intend to do the same thing and kick it up a notch," Food City President and CEO Steven C. Smith said.

The organization assists veterans who were paralyzed and are having a difficult time receiving benefits from the Veterans Administration. It also helps veterans integrate back into society and find a job after the injury.
